How to recognize a trustworthy kennel

What to expect from a breeder and what should raise concerns.

Signs of a responsible kennel

  • The puppy has a pedigree issued by a breed club.
  • The litter can be found in the breed club database or on the kennel’s website.
  • The kennel takes part in dog shows or has an up-to-date public website.
  • You can visit to see the mother and where the puppies are raised.
  • You will receive a contract, a microchip, and a vaccination record.

Warning signs

  • “No pedigree, but the parents have one.” Without a pedigree, the puppy’s ancestry is unverified.
  • One seller offering many breeds and litters at once.
  • Meeting in a parking lot instead of visiting the breeder.
  • Pressure to pay a deposit before you see the puppy.
  • The breeder avoids questions about the parents' health.

A pedigree (PP) documents a dog's ancestry. Public records show activity that can be traced. Neither alone guarantees the dog's health or the quality of its breeding. A registry entry does not verify a breeder's connection to a kennel.

How it works

Where does the pedigree come from?

A puppy with a pedigree doesn't come from a classifieds site. Its breeding history can be traced.

  1. Czech Kennel Union (ČMKU)

The umbrella organization and kennel registry. We get kennel names and municipalities from it.

  2. Breed club

Maintains the studbook, assesses breeding eligibility, and issues pedigrees.

  3. Kennel

They raise a litter, enter dog shows, and register the litter through a club. That's what you see on the profile.

  4. Puppy with a pedigree

Pedigree, microchip, contract. The pedigree confirms that the litter has gone through the full process.

Chovka does not verify breeders itself — it brings together public records of litters, dog shows, and websites.

Frequently asked questions

What to know before you start choosing.

Do I need an account?

No. You can browse listings, kennels, breeds, and guides without registering.

What does a pedigree mean?

A pedigree records a dog's origins and ancestors. On its own, it does not guarantee health or responsible breeding.

How can I recognize a reputable breeder?

Review the available information, ask about the parents' health and arrange a visit. You'll find more questions in the guide.

How do I contact a breeder?

If the listing offers contact through Chovka, use it. Otherwise, you can visit the kennel's public website if one is listed.

How much does a puppy with a pedigree cost?

The price varies by breed and kennel. Ask what it includes: microchipping, vaccinations, deworming, a contract, and a pedigree.

How long is the wait for a puppy?

Often several months. Kennels only have litters from time to time and keep lists of prospective buyers, so get in touch early.
